Traveling Light.......Less is More

We have decided to travel for one year with just 1 carry-on and 1 daypack each. Most airlines allow for one free carry-on and one free personal item (backpacks generally qualify).

Based on the many excellent reviews over a range of travel websites, we chose the “Monos” 4 wheel spinner style hard shell carry-on, with TSA approved locks. While 22” x 14” x 9” meets the size standard for most American airlines and many international carriers, there is no universal standard and allowed dimensions do vary. Another common international dimension is 21.6” x 13.7” x 9.8” which I’m hopeful is a close enough match for our bags

The airline carry-on weight allowance is another variable to consider. Most airlines fall in around 22 lbs, but the weight allowance can range between 17.6 lbs and 26 lbs with the rare 11 or 15 lbs. Planning ahead and packing light will hopefully avoid any excess weight charges.

While I do like the idea of not spending more money for checked luggage, or waiting at the baggage carousel or dealing with lost luggage, the benefits of traveling light extends beyond the airport. All forms of ground transportation, including buses, trains, ferries and even walking a few blocks or up several flights of stairs are all easier when traveling light.

For day trips and general walking around, we have chosen the “Pacsafe” brand day pack. It is designed as an anti-theft bag with slash guard mesh fabric, secure zipper clips, snap hook locks, RFID pockets, and wire reinforced slash guard straps.  With this bit of gear, we will worry less over pickpockets or cut and run thieves. Although we are always vigilant, why not add a little extra security and avoid the hassle over stolen stuff.
