Today we took the bus to Prufening, a district of Regensburg just outside of the old city to meet my cousin Harriet. She has a lovely apartment there, close to both bus and railway stops. It is a quiet location with all the amenities: grocery, bakery, bookshop and more all within walking distance. From Harriet's apartment we walked through her neighborhood and then along footpaths, bike trails and farm fields toward the Danube river. It was hard to believe that we were still within the city limits of Regensburg.
We stopped at the Goldener Hirsch Gasthaus and Biergarten for lunch. For me, the schnitzel and beer break was wonderfully well timed, but our lunch was made more memorable because of the great conversation and company.
Along the walk back we came upon a railway crossing. Apparently as an automobile approaches the crossing gates they must stop, then exit the car and walk over to the little yellow box, press a button and then talk to someone at a remote location who will then raise the gate providing there is no imminent train traffic.
