Communism and Lennon

Communism

Monument to the Victims of Communism

As a former eastern bloc communist state, the Czech republic has an interesting relationship with its communist past. Here is a city with a monument to the victims of communism, a Communism Museum, the Cold War Museum and even a very intriguing KGB museum, coincidentally, just a few doors away from the US embassy.
I was chatting one evening with a local Czech, over a Pilsner Urquell, who reminded me of the events in 1989 which led to the end of communist rule. It was called the velvet revolution. It began with student protests and ended with daily assemblies in Prague of 500,00 people and a massive general strike involving all Czech Citizens. The leaders of the one party system were forced to resign, and free elections followed.

And Lenin Lennon

A few minutes walk from our Airb&b is the Lennon wall. Since the 1960s it has been a place where Czechs have posted grievances and was a symbol of the resistance movement against the communist regime. In 1980 following the death of John Lennon his image appeared and the wall has been associated with peace, love, freedom and graffiti.
