The Alte Steinerne Brucke and Swimming in the Danube

The Alte Steinerne Brucke or Old Stone Bridge is perhaps the most important and certainly the most photographed landmark in this Unesco World heritage city. Completed in 1146 the bridge was important in establishing Regensburg as an important medieval trading center located at the confluence of the Regen and Danube rivers. At the entrance to the city there were originally three towers, one of which still remains.

The old stone bridge connects the Old City to Stadtamhof on the opposite bank of the Danube, and in between lies the island Jahninsel which contains a quiet neighborhood and a lovely park.

The channel of water between Jahninsel island and Stadtamhof is shallow and therefore not navigable, but apparently perfect for swimming, since many locals found spots along the bank for a quick dip. And since for Regensburg, this was an unusually hot August day we too found ourselves swimming in the Danube, albeit close to shore since the swift current would have us downstream en-route to Vienna in no time!
