Moored on the banks of the Danube in the old town is a rather unusual ship, the Ruthof/Ersekcsanad, the last Bavarian double paddle wheel steamship. This ship built in Regensburg in 1922 was used as a barge tug on the river until damaged by a mine in 1944. She was repaired and returned to commercial service until 1979, when she was acquired by the Danube Navigation Museum. The floating museum contains many interesting displays tracking the history of commerce on the Danube from simple rafts to the modern steel hulled barges.
After my maritime indulgence, Tammy and I took an enjoyable one hour sunny Sunday afternoon river cruise on board the Bruckmadl for a different view of Regensburg.
