Pedaling to Pisa

In Lucca, several local bike shops offer a self-guided rental package with a route from Lucca to the famous leaning tower in Pisa. So, today we decided to pedal to Pisa on ebikes, hoping for that little extra boost when we need it. The routing app had us winding through the Tuscan countryside along the Serchio river, through farm fields, along irrigation canals, several small villages, and finally through Pisa terminating at the iconic tower.
Unfortunately for us, the entire piazza del Duomo which includes the Cathedral and the leaning tower of Pisa were closed to the public due to a film shoot. We were only able to take a few photos through the gate. Oh well, it’s the journey, not the destination, and today was a truly memorable journey.
While the distance from Lucca to Pisa is only 30km, the time required to complete the one way journey is over 3 hours. So, for the return trip Tammy suggested we load the bikes onto the local train for the 25 minute ride back to Lucca. A bit saddle sore myself, I did not protest. This gave us time to do several laps on the Lucca wall circling the city and stop for a well earned cold beverage before returning our bikes and calling it another great day!

  1. Wow! This may be my favorite day yet. Even though pasta day was pretty amazing. And your brilliant wife saved your butts, literally with that rain ride. Great pics. Keep em coming.
