Tuscan Hill Towns

For the six days we are in Chianti we rented a car, since there is no other way to really explore this area. And I must say, I am really enjoying driving through the winding roads of Tuscany, I only wish I could be carving these twisty roads on a motorcycle. Another time maybe. The only drawback of the winding mountain roads is the travel time to any destination. For example Siena is only 13 miles away which is a 45 minute drive. But the countryside is beautiful and we are in no rush.

Chianti is the major wine growing region of Tuscany. Along with its picturesque rolling hills, and vineyards there are quite a number of scenic hill towns. On our first two days here, we set off to explore some of the lesser known towns like the borgo (village) of Volpaia (population 24), where we enjoyed a fantastic wild boar stew at the Ristorante La Bottega Cucina Contadina.

We also visited the lovely towns of Pienza, San Gusme, San Quirico D’Orcia, and Radda.
