We’ve arrived in Athens, and at the top of the list is a visit to the Acropolis, with the obligatory picture in front of the Parthenon. Check. Following the advice of several travel blogs and websites, we arrived at 8:00 just as the site opened, and well before the tour buses deposited the horde of tourists.

Everyone in the US has heard of Rick Steves, his travel programs and Europe guidebooks, which are good reliable resources. But what we have found very useful is his free (my favorite price point) travel app which contains audio guide walking tours of major European cities, like Athens, and major sites like the Acropolis. Needless to say we used the downloadable audio guide and map at the Acropolis for a more informed visit without the need to engage a rather expensive tour guide. Thanks Rick. |
Stone blocks awaiting their correct placement in the reconstruction process |

These T shaped cut outs are part of the original construction, and would match similar cut outs on an adjacent block. The cut outs would contain iron, securing the stones in place . |
