Into the Volcano

The best way I’ve found to clear the cobwebs from between the ears is a motorcycle ride, or here on Nisyros an able island scooter ride. We rent our scooter and head off to explore the island, and ride into the volcano. That’s right, Nisyros is a volcanic island, an active volcanic island. The large hydrothermal Stefanos crater is the only place in Greece where you can experience walking on an active volcanic crater. We watch the steam rising from the surface and breathe in the overwhelming scent of sulfur.

Next we stopped at the very small villages of Nikia and Emporios, both built on the outer rim of the Caldera. Both villages have beautiful views of the Aegean on one side and panoramic views of the volcanic craters on the other. The opening picture of the crater was taken from a viewing point in Nikia.

  1. The pictures are gorgeous. You two are brave. Driving into a volcano village! The Caldera. Hmmm. Why do I like the sound of that? 😊
