Koulouri and Soup

Everyday starts at Takis, our neighborhood bakery for fresh koulouri, a bagel like sesame coated bread ring. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Traditionally coated with sesame seeds, though some variations incorporate raisins, cranberries or olives. From here we set off on another day of exploration.

Today's mission is to find an obscure little restaurant we’ve heard about, located near the central food market, near the corner Sokratous and Theatrou. Diporto, the restaurant, has no signage on the building or door. Just follow your nose and when you’ve got the scent of grilled fish or meat coming from the basement, you’ve arrived.

There was no need for a menu in this establishment. We were summoned to the counter to choose from the 3 huge pots of bean soups, which were then delivered to the table along with hearty bread and half a liter of white wine. Next, without ordering, a plate of grilled fish just appears. The fish was wonderfully charred and salty, but the star of our lunch was the humble homemade soup. Tammy, not one to rave, declared “this is the best soup I’ve ever had”. I can’t disagree.
