Rhodes

Our next stop is Rhodes, the largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, known for its medieval walled city, intact moat, ancient ruins and harbor fortifications. Once the domain of the crusading knights of St. John, and then the Ottoman Turks from 1522, this ancient city was also once claimed by the Minoans, Mycenaen Greeks and Romans. Now the harbor is home to large cruise ships, and the main pedestrian walk in the walled city is filled with tacky souvenir shops and overpriced tourist restaurants. Having said that, walking through the back alleys of the largely preserved walled city was quite interesting and even with the modern yachts in the marina the harbor still retains its sense of history.
