Ship Happens

Thursday we arrive at Piraeus, the port of Athens, ready to board the overnight ferry to the Dodecanese island of Nisyros. We checked in well before the scheduled departure time of 3 pm, only to be informed that, as a result of strong winds and high seas, our departure had been delayed until 1am the next morning. Within a few hours we are notified that our ferry has been canceled. The ticket office advises us that we can exchange our tickets for another larger ferry, the Ariadne, which will sail at 6 pm to Kos, not our destination island but close. After boarding it is announced that there will be a 7 hour delay in our departure. Within a few more hours we are notified that this ferry was also canceled.

So, back to Athens for the night. Thankfully our Athens Airbnb was still available for another night, saving us the hassle of sorting out new last minute accommodations.

As it turns out there were travel advisories for gale force winds on the Aegean for the day of our sail, with conditions improving by the next day.  So, the next day we arrived and boarded our ferry to Nisyros. I was apprehensive until the dock lines were cleared and the gangways were up, and we were finally underway. Next stop Nisyros!
