Since our first night in Athens we’ve been eating Souvlaki. This classic Greek fast food consists of grilled meat, tomatoes, onions, and sauce in a warm rolled pita. All that mouth watering goodness for only $3.00. There are variations on this basic theme. Some cooks add tomato sauce, some tzatziki, and some toss in a few french fries and we've had them both ways.
But which establishment deserves the title of the best Souvlaki in Athens? In part it comes down to personal preference, but the overwhelming favorite in virtually every Athens vlog, blog, and foodie website points to Kosta, and I have to agree. This was simply the BEST Souvlaki I’ve ever had.
This narrow takeout restaurant always has a line out the door, and was well worth the wait. Our Kalamaki Pitti (pork souvlaki) was cooked in front of us on a charcoal fired grill. The Pita is heated and flipped on the same grill as the skewers of pork, until there is a light char. The fresh tomatoes, onions and special red sauce are added to the pita and stay on the grill, allowing the flavors to meld and then served piping hot. Magic!
On our second visit I filmed our Souvlaki being cooked.
The clip ends abruptly when our order was ready, I couldn't wait:
