The Evil Eye

While here in Symi, I have been noticing these concentric blue and white circular discs hanging over doorways and entrance gates. These symbols I am told are called the evil eye, or Mati in Greek, and are symbols of protection. The symbols ward off bad luck or hardship which comes from someone with a jealous nature or malicious intent casting an ‘evil eye’.

There is some confusion regarding the color blue in the design. Some Greeks tell me that those with blue eyes are naturally protected from a curse, and some sources say those with blue or green eyes can more easily give or receive the evil eye. Given that my wife and I both have blue eyes, and she has been known on occasion to give me ‘that look’, I’m just not sure what to think.
