The Motorcycle Temple

Our final destination in India is the lake City of Udaipur. Unfortunately there is no direct train service between Jodhpur and Udaipur, so we hired a reasonably priced car with a driver. On our route there were two suggested stops, both which proved quite memorable.

The first stop is an unusual temple dedicated to a Royal Enfield 350 Bullet Motorcycle ‘RNJ 7773’. This shrine known as the Sri Om Banna Temple or the Bullet Baba Shrine is located on the Pali-Jodhpur highway near Chotila. The shrine has hundreds of daily visitors who make offerings, observe the eternal flame, pray for a safe journey and view the famous motorcycle.

As the legend goes, the young son of a local leader, Sri Om Banna, was travelling on the highway lost control of his motorcycle, hit a tree and died. The local police removed the bike from the scene, however the impounded motorcycle reappeared at the crash site the next morning. The bike was again removed, the gas tank drained and the wheels chained. But the bike miraculously reappeared once again before the next dawn at the crash site. The locals, believing that the spirit of Om Banna resides in the motorcycle, decided to build a temple to enshrine the miracle motorcycle.
