The Taj Mahal: New Year's Day

We awoke early on New Year's Day in order to arrive at the Taj Mahal before sunrise. While I have seen thousands of images of the Taj Mahal, nothing prepared me for the sense of wonder which washed over me in the presence of this magnificent structure. Just as pictures of the grand canyon cannot capture the magnitude of the scene, the same holds true here.

The Taj Mahal, completed in 1648, was constructed as a tomb for the third and most favored wife of the Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan. Although a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz, Taj Mahal literally means Palace (Mahal) of Taj (corruption of Mumtaz). While this beautiful white marble palace of Mumtaz is a tomb, it also stands as an eternal monument to Shah Jahan’s great love and devotion.
