Another very popular attraction here in Dalat is the old Railway station. Built in 1938, it is the country's oldest station and reflects the French colonial period with its art deco stylings. While the Vietnam rail network was largely destroyed during the war and other sections left abandoned, this station still operates a short tourist line to the nearby town of Trai Mat. We arrived at the station in time for one of the four scheduled trips to find there were no seats available. We could however, purchase reduced fare standing only tickets, placing us on the rear balcony, which in my opinion was the prime spot.
Our ride onboard the ‘Dalat Plateau Railroad' was a thoroughly enjoyable journey on a vintage rail car through the sunny countryside. Upon arriving at Trai Mat, we had time to explore the unusual Linh Phuoc temple (next post) before catching our return train.
