We are now in the small provincial city of Kampot, or more precisely a 20 minute motorbike ride from the center of town. We have rented an Airbnb house in the lush countryside among rural Cambodians and a large community of Expats. In this area, google maps lists each unpaved road as “unnamed road”, and since there are no street addresses, parcel deliveries are linked to your phone number. When your package arrives, you receive a call to pick up your delivery in town.
Within a 30 minute scooter ride from the center of town, we arrived at a pepper plantation for a tour and tasting experience. The famous Kampot pepper, like wines which have a protected geographical appellation of origin, also carry a certification based on its distinct terroir. The pepper types, based on production method, include green, black, red, and white. Many of the local Kampot seafood dishes are served with stalks of fresh green peppers, and of course nothing tops a steak au poivre with fresh peppers and a hearty pepper sauce!
