Charming Hoi An

The small city of Hoi An, Vietnam, with its Unesco recognized old town, is the most beautiful city we have visited in Asia. The old yellow ochre french colonial buildings, abundant shops, cafes and restaurants are simply put, charming. The streets are decorated with hanging lanterns which in the evening are illuminated making the streetscape even more magical. Despite the number of tourists exploring the old town each day, it does not feel touristy. This is a tidy, welcoming city that becomes ever more endearing the longer you stay.

The Japanese Bridge is a symbol of Hoi An and appears on the 20,000 Dong bank note.

Running through the city is the Thu Bon river, and along the old city waterfront are many colorful tourist boats available for a river cruise, which proved to be a fun excursion one evening. As it turned out it was just us and Captain Tran Duong.

As we returned to the dock the lanterns were being lit.
