Morning Alms Ceremony

One of the most interesting cultural experiences in Luang Prabang is to participate in or observe the daily Alms Ceremony (Sai Bat). Each morning at sunrise saffron robed monks and novices emerge with their alms bowls (bat) to receive offerings of sticky rice and other food from the awaiting devotees, and now many tourists as well.

The popularity of this Buddhist tradition has resulted in large numbers of visitors and tour groups flocking to Sakkaline Road each morning to view the daily ritual. While the original intent was for the devoted to provide the monks with basic sustenance, the number of offerings now exceeds the need, and large portions of the offerings are discarded. Nonetheless, the silent procession was beautiful to witness.

Two days later I walked through the quiet neighborhood near our hotel and found a more authentic alms procession. There were no tourists, only locals with baskets of sticky rice observing the morning ritual. In this day and age, the necessity of providing food to sustain monks no longer exists. But the tradition continues, and gives the devoted the opportunity to gain merit through daily offerings and like most rituals, they provide consistency and comfort.
