Sarlat-la-Caneda

Sarlat is a medieval town in the Perigord region of southwest France. From the first moment, we were under the spell of this quintessentially French town.

Just off the main shopping street is the pedestrian only center with a labyrinth of narrow passageways revealing a bevy of foie gras shops. On the Place du Marche aux Oies, the old goose trading square, stands the 3 geese statue in honor of the bird with the gift of Foie Gras!

On the Wednesday and Saturday market days, the region's delicacies are all on display. Along with the fresh produce and local specialties like Foi Gras, Cheese and Cassoulet Haricot Blanc, we also found the prized black Perigord Truffles.

With such an abundance of traditional offerings, we simply had no choice but to fill a shopping bag with provisions. But despite now having a full larder of local specialties, we also took advantage of dining at several of the outstanding area restaurants like Le Presidial and the Michelin star favorite, Le Grand Bleu.

And joining us for a few days to savor this fine French cuisine was our German cousin Hatti, who agrees with us that:
La cuisine francaise est magnifique!
