Here in the Basque region of northern Spain, there is a great sense of anticipation for the start of this year's Tour de France. For 2023, the cycling race begins in Bilbao with the second stage running from Vitoria-Gasteiz to San Sebastian and then onward through French Basque country en-route to Bayonne. Preparations are clearly underway everywhere in Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz, with staging popping up, posters on display and yellow bikes everywhere. In particular, I enjoyed a series of posters in Vitoria illustrating the passion for cycling in the region through a public display of historic photographs.
We are looking forward to the start of this year's Tour de France on July 1st, and hopefully we will be able to watch some of the televised coverage as the teams cycle through the Basque cities we have visited!
