The Moto B&B and Wee Jimmy the Chef

We departed Wales heading to our next destination, the southwestern duchy of Cornwall. But first we stopped for a quick overnight stay in the small market town of Crediton. Our accommodations were at the Union Road Moto Vela Motorcycle repair shop/cafe/B&B. This establishment is a sanctuary for touring riders, and offers comfortable rooms above the shop, and an inviting ground floor motorcycle gear display room and cafe where one can take in the heady aroma of fresh brewed coffee and motor oil.

Our stay in Crediton was not a random choice. We had made dinner reservations at Cairney’s Bistro, a highly recommended restaurant with limited seating and a select fixed menu featuring locally sourced produce. The Stinging Nettle Soup finished with cream was a perfect prelude to our mains, Braised Shoulder of Lamb with a rich Wine Sauce and Pan-Fried Breast of Chicken with Mushroom Risotto. Simply amazing!

The talented owner/chef Jim Cairney had a long successful career and now in retirement opens his small restaurant on Friday and Saturday nights for the pure joy of sharing his love of fine dining. Jim apparently enjoys interacting with his customers as much as he enjoys cooking. With his sharp sense of humor, Between courses, he entertained us with colorful stories, all delivered with his heavy Scottish accent. We left with full stomachs and broad smiles.

In short, we had a magnificent meal and a memorable evening.
