Osaka Japan

Next stop on our travels, Osaka Japan, known for a vibrant street food scene, Sushi, Sashimi and Ramen! In the popular Dotonbori district, restaurants display large animated creatures all designed to lure in customers to try their specialties, like Takoyaki, little fried dough balls filled with diced octopus.

Welcome to ‘Genrokuzushi’, a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, where we simply remove offerings as they pass by. With chopsticks in hand, we sampled and let the plates pile up until we were fully satisfied. When done we pressed a button on the counter and an attendant arrived to count our plates to determine the amount due. Not only was the Sushi fresh and tasty, but also quite affordable and to be honest great fun!

Among the must try dishes in Osaka is Okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake filled with shredded cabbage, batter, egg, and a combination of pork, squid or shrimp, and topped with a tangy brown sauce and bonito flakes. These pancakes are prepared before customers and are served and eaten from a hot griddle on the counter top.

A quick video clip of the chef mixing the Okonomiki on the grill:

Ending on a sweet note, there is nothing quite as satisfying as a slab of vanilla ice cream sandwiched in a melon cake!
