Feta Never Betta!

For me, just as important as visiting impressive museums and the must see sights, is sampling new food, especially new different local specialties. And thus far Athens has not disappointed us in delicious fresh eats. One evening I had a Greek salad with a side of tzatziki and pita, that was so incredible that I went back the next night and ordered the exact same meal. It was that good. Fresh tomatoes, cucumber, onions, real olive oil and a firm spiced feta like I have never experienced before. Thumbs up for Arcadia Restaurant.

In any new city we always head for the city market. The Central Municipal Athens Market, as it is known, has separate produce, meat and fish areas with so many stalls, it’s hard to imagine how so many vendors can compete and survive. As with most of these markets there are restaurants on site and we opted for Aris, where they specialize in grilled meat and fish (I wonder why). House white wine, grilled shrimp and grilled gilt-head bream (a perch-like fish) made for a lovely lunch.

Athens has really great food, and I can’t wait until we travel east next week to the
Dodecanese islands for right off the boat fresh seafood!
