Varanasi Boatyards

In Varanasi there are all manner of old wooden boats working the river. Primarily used in the passenger sightseeing trade, they vary from over capacity ferries shuttling between banks, to small passenger row boats plying the ghats. For the benefit of my boat building friends, I’ve taken a few photographs highlighting some of the more unusual construction and repair techniques. A heavy coat of tar on burlap was applied to the hull before nailing tin strips. Presumeably a fresh coat of brightly colored paint will finish the job. Applying tar to waterproof seam with your hands is an age old method. Constructing the hull planks without first assembling a skeleton of symmetrical ribs is a rarely used, somewhat archaic boat building method, interesting to see. Porto's Bank of Materials

During our time in Portugal, we have become enamored with the architectural use of tiles, particularly the hand painted Azulejos tiles. These blue and white illustrations are visible everywhere, but most dramatically on the exteriors of churches. This style of expression is also a prominent feature in the much visited and admired interior space of Porto's Sao Bento Train Station. The tiles are the work of artist Jorge Colaco and the illustrations depict the history of Portugal. Here in Porto, there is such a reverence for this architectural heritage that a special repository exists within an unassuming building known as the Bank of Materials. This special public works storehouse collects historic tiles from derelict buildings for use in future preservation projects within the city. Kyoto: Festivals and Temples

During our stay in Kyoto, we were able to witness several public celebrations. By mere chance on the Sunday afternoon of May 12th, the festival of Imamiya passed our Resi-Stay on Senbon Dori (street). A great commotion accompanied the arrival of the Shinko-sai, a parade of Mikoshi (portable shrines) carried on sturdy shoulders. Traffic came to a halt as a swell of men danced and rocked the massive Mikoshi with great effort and enthusiasm. The following video clip captures some of the excitement: https://youtu.be/tLjFGOD3zpk Three days later on May 15, we experienced the Aoi Matsuri Festival, a silent procession which began at the Imperial palace then proceeded to the Simogamo Jinja Shrine and eventually ended at the Kamigamo Jinja Shrine. Participants were dressed in traditional costumes of the Heian period as they followed court carriages, oxen and horsemen.
